The belts on a diesel engine drive many components such as your fans, alternators, and pumps. Belts that are not properly adjusted or are in poor condition can cause engine noise. Make sure that the belt has no missing chunks and they are not dry or cracked. There are many types of belts used in an engine depending on how old your engine is. In newer engines, serpentine belts are used to snake it's way through multiple functions and serve as an all in one belt. Older engines typically have multiple belts, called V Belts or Drive Belts, are used to go through one or two accessories. Lastly, Timing Belts are used to keep everything in sync to keep moving parts from running into each other. Belts require additional components to operate including the pulleys and pins.
