Crankshaft bearings keep the crankshaft in place and rotating freely within the engine block. A key role of the crankshaft bearings are to reduce friction between the rotating crankshaft and the stationary engine block. Excessive heat and pressure can cause damage to the crankshaft bearings along with any friction from dirt getting into the oil or the oil getting cut off. The crankshaft seal is what seals the end of the crankshaft and prevents oil from leaking out of the crankcase. Leaks can be common with faulty crankshaft seals causing engines to drip.
