The exhaust manifold collects the exhaust gases that gets emitted from the cylinders and passes them through a single pipe to the catalytic converter and out the tailpipe. The main symptom of a faulty exhaust manifold system is if you hear a hissing sound from the engine. This means that you have a crack in the exhaust manifold causing a leak in exhaust which creates a loud noise as the gasses push through the crack. This sound typically gets louder as you accelerate. You may also notice a reduction in engine power, especially during acceleration. Exhaust manifolds are heavy duty so they rarely break or crack but it can happen with some heavy equipment due to the increased stress and heat that the engine is put through. Depending on the engine, exhaust manifolds can be expensive to fix as the part itself can be upwards of $1,000 if it needs to be replaced all together. If the crack or break is small enough, the exhaust manifold can be welded.
