Fuel filters are used to keep the larger particles out of the fuel system. This can include dirt, debris and water to an extent. The fuel filter is one of the first items to look at if there is a no start issue. Symptoms of a bad fuel filter are a decrease in engine power and random engine misfires or stalls. This is because there is a lack of fuel getting to the fuel injectors. If you notice a lack of acceleration or power when climbing hills, you could have a clogged fuel filter. Fuel filters should be replaced about every 2 years. For heavy equipment, it is recommended to inspect the fuel filter more regularly due to the higher amount of dirt and debris your equipment engine is exposed to. Diesel fuel systems in heavy equipment will often contain several diesel fuel filters to make sure that clean fuel is getting to the engine.
