The spark plug is responsible for igniting the air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber that produces the power in your engine. The spark is generated by the alternator and jumps from the electrode to the hook at the tip of the plug. Spark plugs last a long time before needing to be replaced. However, the electrode wears over time and can be replaced one at a time. Symptoms of a bad spark plug may include engine misfires or trouble starting because the spark is not properly igniting the air/gas mixture in the combustion cylinder. Spark plugs are only found in gas engines, diesel engines require glow plugs. If your engine begins to misfire, check that your spark plugs are providing adequate sparks.
